The duo, vital to the rise and fall of LSD in the 1960s, was a kind of alternative odd – if Oscar and Felix did a lot of mind-altering substances. Now they’re the subjects of a new documentary, The Sunshine Makers, which chronicles how they were responsible for the production and distribution of the highly popular Orange Sunshine brand of acid. Ronald Stark was operating a secret laboratory in Paris, with the British scientist, Richard Kemp, as his chief chemist. Towards the the end of 1969, Stark decided to expand his operation to the US, through the Brotherhood of Eternal Love. To this end he reached out to Billy Hitchcock via his envoy, Tord Svenson.
ALD-52: Specs & Technical Details
The Brotherhood’s primary goal was to be able to distribute LSD to as many people as possible for as little money as they could manage. California officially banned the substance in October 1966, and a protest three months later in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park called the “Human Be-In” underscored the hippie resistance to the government’s infringing on their psychedelic enlightenment. Journalist Nicholas Schou takes us deep inside the Brotherhood, combining exclusive interviews with both the group’s surviving members as well as the cops who chased them. A wide-sweeping narrative of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll (and more drugs) that runs from Laguna Beach to Maui to Afghanistan, Orange Sunshine explores how America moved from the era of peace and free love into a darker time of hard drugs and paranoia.

Therefore, ALD-52 may be legal in countries that don’t have laws banning all lysergamides, new psychoactive substances (NPS), or analogs of currently prohibited substances. Factors including the dose, weight, and metabolic rate can all affect the amount of time ALD-52 or related lysergamides remain active. High doses of this compound are still going to produce powerful psychoactive effects and can be just as jarring as any other lysergamide, including LSD. Because of some inefficiencies with the conversion of ALD-52 to LSD, this compound is slightly milder than LSD itself and takes longer to kick in.
Carl Hart: Drug Use For Grown-Ups
All classic LSD is made of the same basic stuff, no matter if you call it LSD vs acid. Although, the process of making it can look quite different depending on what recipe was used to make the psychedelic. Unlike psilocybin, mescaline, and several other natural psychoactive drugs, LSD is partially synthetic. That means that while the base of the compound is natural, numerous man-induced chemical transformations need to take place before the final structure of the LSD-25 molecule takes shape. We’ll start off with total honesty—LSD and acid are the exact same thing.
Gold Pills
The weaving of such a powerful — and in the view of some true believers, actually magical — drug within the broader social fabric may affront some true-believing psychonauts’ own purity tests. When a drug that once inspired a passionate, even fanatic, desire to turn the whole world on its head is being marshalled as a medicament to treat more down-to-earth maladies, it can seem like LSD’s latent potential is being hemmed in. But for a great many others, these medical and clinical interventions are just new forms of the same psychedelic rituals, in which LSD has always served as a sacrament. Another key figure in that tribe was Tim Scully, a Berkeley math whiz and electronics designer who, in time, would stake out his own LSD empire. The best way to express this high-minded idealism was by mass-producing extremely potent, extremely pure LSD, almost as if its non-dilution was an expression of their own virtue.

But dreams die hard, and Schou’s interviews with surviving Brothers, some doing well, some penniless, illustrate the thin line between dream and delusion. “We ushered in the age we are in now, which reflects a much more open-minded, open-hearted and spiritually inspired world,” reflects one Brother, who must not get out much. In their heyday, “Brothers” smuggled surfboards inlaid with LSD and hash worldwide. Mexican officials were paid off to allow tons of pot to cross the border.

Nick remembered it as being a pound while I remembered it as being a kilo. He claimed to have European laboratories that could produce an unlimited amount of LSD and all he lacked was American distribution. I was thrilled to hear that because by then some of the gumption had leaked out of my enthusiasm for saving the world by making LSD. Over a period of days Ron managed to convince us to introduce him to the Brotherhood and we took him down to the Brotherhood Ranch in Southern California. By May 1969, at their laboratory in Windsor, California, Nick Sand; his pregnant partner, Jill Henry; Tim Scully; and David Mantell had produced over a kilogram of LSD, enough for more than 4 million 300 μg doses.

- “If we could turn on everyone in the world, then maybe we’d have a new world of peace and love.
- Owsley and Scully finally met a few weeks before the Trips Festival in the fall of 1965.
- In 1972, Nick Sand, Tim Scully, and other Brotherhood members were arrested and charged with drug manufacturing and distribution following a California-based investigation called Operation BEL, which specifically targeted the Brotherhood.
- Rhesus monkeys (0.15 mg/kg i.m.) eliminated 39% of the (14)C in the urine and 23% in the feces in 96 hr.
- In the United States, ALD-52 isn’t specifically mentioned on the list of prohibited substances.
- But as the movement attracted more seekers, Millbrook was phased out as Haight-Ashbury became the movement’s epicenter.
Implementing deafening fuzz and satanic screams to create their proto-metal monstrosities, short-lived stoner bands pressed their lysergic experiments in microscopic quantities before blacking out entirely. Lifted from the ashes of the acid rock hell fire are 18 distorted tales of dope fiends, pill poppers, and the baddest of trips. Deluxe 2LP comes housed in a blacklight poster-style jacket illustrated by Benjamin Marra, replete with flocking and lysergic neon. 24 pages documenting the creeping existential dread of the hard rock underground are tucked into the gatefold pocket alongside two dead dinosaur-heavy LPs.

Then he pulls out this tin filled with these yellowish orange colored tablets. He said they were called Orange sunshine and they were pressed with tumeric. He gave each of us one then wished us a happy festival and we never saw him again. 2 of us ended up taking half of their tablets and they said they had a really intense 3hr come up and it was super visual heavy. The Brotherhood’s story is “the most surreal saga of the 1960s that has never been told,” writes journalist Nicholas Schou, whose new book, “Orange Sunshine,” is as close to an “authorized” story as there’s likely to be. After all, if they hadn’t been able to maintain it, Sand and Scully would have failed in the one thing they’ve always believed in—love.

ALD-52 is generally considered milder than LSD, so a batch of acid containing this compound is unlikely to be as strong as the Orange Sunshine tabs were known for. The other reason is that in order to make ALD-52, one has to first make LSD — which is illegal. Manufacturing ALD-52 is a poor workaround to strict LSD laws found in virtually every country. It’s relatively hard to find this compound, even in places where it’s considered legal.
A piece written by the “O” Courant that can be found in Gemma Olsen’s House dismisses Sunshine as “some kind of nasty prank”. Scully knew the government would move quickly to suppress LSD distribution, and he wanted to obtain as much of the main precursor chemical, lysergic acid, as possible. Scully soon learned that Owsley Stanley possessed a large amount (440 grams) of lysergic acid monohydrate. Owsley and Scully finally met a few weeks before the Trips Festival in the fall of 1965. The 30-year-old Owsley took the 21-year-old Scully as his apprentice3 and they pursued their mutual interest in electronics and psychedelic synthesis.
However, ALD-52 is converted to LSD by the liver anyway, so the active ingredient exerting its effect on your consciousness is still the same compound. For example, neither Canada nor Denmark specifically names ALD-52 as illegal, and neither country bans lysergamides nor related analogs. They don’t need to be much bigger than a single grain of sand for the test to be effective. Place them on separate areas of a white ceramic plate, testing tray, or mug. Most of the lysergamides share the same general set of effects and have comparable potency and safety profiles.
